Well as I sit here this morning, the events of the weekend loom larger then life. BRIK was picked to win it all and for Saturday at least they looked the part as they along with the River Rats, Valley Lyons, Silverhawks all went 3-0 and played some good games. Several of us made great come from behind wins. Then on Sunday, several of us would meet and cut the field down a bit. With the Silverhawks losing a 2 run lead to the Valley Lyons, and BRIK losing in the bottom of the 6th to KHT Pumpers it looked like some one would go home 3-2 for the weekend, while another would be 4-1 and the River Rats & Lyons would leave town at 5-0.
BRIK has worked hard and picked up a few new players. It was on Sunday that the questions started to form. Players wanting more playing time, pitchers needing more work and how to get everyone into the games. Well BRIK won a close one against the Silverhawks to finish at 4-1 for the weekend with the only loss being one that we feel we gave away. As I second-guessed myself on several things, listened to others and made unnecessary changes. I remember telling the team to hang in there, make the play and not to let things get them caught up emotionally in the game. To remember it’s only a game and not life and death.
Well Sunday evening it came to reality about that fact. My number 3 son, DANNY #21, had an asthma attack and stopped breathing on us. It was only due to CPR training that we were able to keep him alive until the paramedic
arrived. We rushed him to the hospital were they were able to get him breathing on a machine. As of this writing he is in ICU on a life support until they can get him breathing on his own again, and now, suddenly the games do not seem so important, the umpires calls do not carry life and death with them. You see it is really just a game, it is suppose to be fun, it is supposed to be a time that we can all enjoy each others friendship and all. Sometimes the good Lord has to put us all back in our places, to remind us that there are more important things in this life then winning a ball game. It is hard for me, someone who has spent his life playing, coaching, and trying to teach the game, as well as the game of life. So my friend, as you ponder the weekend and how things were taken away by a bad call, or a bad play, or the fact that you did not play as much as you wanted, please just remember it is only a game.
